iPhone 4S Launch Day Preorders Sold Out

One lesson that iPhone fanatics learned through the years is that if there will be a new version coming out, secure your preorder ASAP. And sadly enough, those who ordered their iPhone 4S won’t be getting any unit on the launch date.

Apple originally set the delivery of iPhone 4S on October 14 which marks as the first day the users will be able to hold the new iPhone. But after a while, Apple updated their website saying that those who preordered the new phone can expect to get them in one to two weeks time.

We don’t know yet if this change in schedule has anything to do with Steve Jobs demise, regardless iPhone fanatics are still eager on getting the new iPhone, as long as it’s not the iPhone 5 being sold in China.

This is bad news to other iPhone 4S owner wannabes however; as this news suggests that iPhone 4S on the launched date at least thru the Apple store are already sold out. But if you think that we won’t be seeing epic long lines that we’ve seen in past iPhone launches then you’re wrong. Those who want to grab iPhone 4S earlier than most of

iPhone 5 Is Now On Sale in China

While fanboys from the most parts of the world are disappointed with Apple and Tim Cook not giving them the new iPhone 5 that tech blogs have been hyping about for at least the past few weeks, there is one place on Earth that already has iPhone 5 and that’ll be no other than China.

Before you complain about Apple favoring China you should know that the iPhone 5 we’re talking about is a pirated product.

The latest iPhone 5 is currently on sale in China. That shouldn’t be a surprise since the country is known for counterfeit products selling cheap versions of almost every known Western brand of clothes, perfume, movies, toys and of course gadgets, but to come up with something that’s not even on the market is something newsworthy.

New Safari 4.0.4 is released with security flaw patch

11th November Apple has released an update to its Safari Web browser, addressing a vulnerability that could allow an image file to exploit Macs with older software.

According to Apple, the flaw allowed maliciously crafted images with an embedded color profile to execute arbitrary code, or unexpectedly terminate the application. The issue does not affect Mac OS X 10.6 systems, and was already addressed with Security Update 2009-005 for Mac OS X 10.5.8 systems.

The 36.2MB download is available via Software Update. In addition to the security patch, Safari 4.0.4 is said to offer:

  • Improved JavaScript performance

  • Improved Full History Search performance for users with a large number of history items

Apple pushes developers to deliver 64-bit support with new Snow Leopard beta

As expected, Apple on Wednesday evening provided its vast developer community with a new pre-release distribution of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and asked that they focus attention on 64-bit compatibility in their third party kernel extensions.

The seed, true to predictions earlier in the day, is indeed build 10A314, which arrived in tandem with an identically labeled build of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Server.

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is «strongly encouraging» developers to get busy developing and testing 64-bit support in their kernel extensions (typically low level hardware drivers) for the new build.

While relatively few third party developers create kernel-level software, the new operating system won't work in 64-bit if users lack 64-bit versions of the kernel extensions (kexts) they need.

Developers can deliver both 32 and 64-bit kexts that will enable Snow Leopard to automatically boot as a 64-bit kernel on 64-bit hardware, including all Macs that use a Core 2 Duo or Xeon CPU, while also working properly in 32-bit on earlier Macs using Core Solo or Core Duo CPUs.

Microsoft faced similar driver transition issues when it tried to move Windows XP users to Windows Vista, which used a new driver architecture. Windows users have also faced some transition problems in moving from the 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista to the 64-bit versions of those operating systems.

Apple's need to get kernel developers up to speed on 64-bit support is somewhat less problematic because Mac OS X runs on a much smaller subset of hardware than Windows does, and Apple develops or manages most of the kernel-level driver software that most Mac users need to use the new 64-bit kernel.

Users who have specialized hardware and want to run Snow Leopard in 64-bit will need to make sure their vendors supply them with 64-bit versions of those drivers by the time the new operating system ships; it is expected to be released sometime this summer.

Snow Leopard roadmap; Pro app updates in pipeline

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple's roadmap for the final stretch of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard development currently calls for the release of three 'key' builds through the company's high-membership Apple Developer Connection.

Each of the builds will carry a significance in its own right, the first of which is scheduled to appear between now and the start of WWDC 2009 during the second week of June. This build will reportedly include «big updates» to system components and functionality.

The next build is said to arrive alongside the start of WWDC on June 8th. It's expected to be the first build of the next-gen OS that will be «feature complete,» bundling significant changes to the Mac OS X interface, assuming those changes are not approved for inclusion in the aforementioned build.

A third and final build is tentatively scheduled to make its way to developers in the weeks between WWDC and the software's formal release. This build is expected to serve as a lead-in to the final candidate stage that precedes the declaration of a Gold Master build suited for duplication on optical media.

People familiar with the matter have previously estimate that it will take Apple upwards of two-months from the time it shows off a feature complete Snow Leopard at WWDC to deliver the software to market, suggesting a release date around August.

Apple may also choose to seed more marginal builds intermittently between these key builds if it runs into unexpected issues and requires additional feedback from developers.
