Mac version of Google Chrome is coming in December

Mac version of Google Chrome is coming in December Google is planning to launch Chrome browser beta version for Mac OS X in December. Nick Baum, product manager for Chrome, gave the details in a post on the Google Groups page for browser extensions. The post encouraged developers to update their extensions to take advantage of the new Chrome user interface.

"Why make the switch now? The earlier you switch, the more time you will have to polish your experience for our Beta launch in early December," Baum said. "We realize this means dropping Mac support for a couple of weeks, but we already have people working on that. If you prioritize the Windows and Linux versions, we'll bring you cross-platform parity as soon as we can!"

In October, Google Chrome for Mac released the status of developer preview. To the new version will be added QuickTime and printing compatibility.

Company officials had previously said they hope to release a final version of Chrome for Mac by the end of 2009. Currently, the Webkit-based browser is only available as a test version for developers, even though three versions of it have already been released on Windows.

Unfolded Google Internal Speed Tool for Developers

Google is well-known for its fast searching engine as it can provide search queries within a count of half-second or even less.
Other services of Google perform considerable service for internet users as well except Gmail which sometimes shows poor performance. Google is typical with minimalist design. Yet, the speed performance of Google leaves no lack to the users to get the result of queries at once.

Good news. The key weapon of Google’s velocity is known as Page Speed, an internal tool that works to make efficient its site contents, is unfolded nowadays for website developers. Firefox plugin incorporated with Firebug is the first open-sourced tool that allows individual users to get the websites much faster than usual.

Excerpted from Google Blog Post:

A simple illustration on how Page Speed works to optimize your sites performance is that when you upload an image, compressed type of files will automatically provided for you. How Google

Ranking scientists by their citations–the number of times they are mentioned in other scientists’ papers– is a miserable business. Everybody can point to ways in which this system is flawed:

* not all citations are equal. The importance of the citing paper is a significant factor
* scientists in different fields of study use citations in different ways. An average paper in the life sciences is cited about six times, three times in physics, and about once in mathematics.
* ground-breaking papers may be cited less often because a field is necessarily smaller in its early days.
* important papers often stop being cited when they are incorporated into textbooks

The pattern of citations between papers forms a complex network, not unlike the one the internet forms. Might that be a clue that point us towards a better way of assessing the merits of the papers that it consists of?

Sergei Maslov from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York state and Sidney Redner at Boston University have asked themselves just that question and suggest that Google’s PageRank algorithm might throw some light on the matter.

Google Toolbar in Firefox: a personalized new tab page

Those of you who use Google Toolbar on Firefox are probably pretty familiar with the many features Toolbar 5 (beta) has to offer — from bookmarks to buttons and search box to «send to.» We've added a couple more features to the Firefox Toolbar, so feel free to download this «second beta» to get all the latest and greatest Google Toolbar has to offer.

One of the features I'm really excited about is the new tab page. Now, when you open up a new tab, instead of the blank white page you see by default in Firefox, you will instead see small thumbnails of your favorite sites (up to 9), as well as recently-closed and bookmarked pages based on your browser history. You can edit the thumbnails, and all this data remains locally on your browser, which means none of the information about your most viewed sites or recently closed pages will be sent back to Google. If for whatever reason you don't like this updated new tab page, you can always change it back to a blank page or to the website of your choice through either your Toolbar or Firefox settings. Some tab extensions may conflict with this feature, and it currently isn't compatible with Firefox 2, so make sure you check your settings or visit the Google Toolbar help center if you are having any problems.

Next time you want to go to your favorite site more quickly or restore an accidentally closed tab, you don't need to type out the URL. Typing Ctrl + T or double-clicking to the right of your open tabs will open up the new tab page with all your favorite sites right at your finger tips.

In addition, this release now provides the ability for Hebrew- and Arabic-speaking users to access Toolbar 5 with robust right-to-left text support. We've also fixed some of the most reported bugs to give you a faster and more stable experience with this update.

Everyone Loves Google, Until It

THE popularity of Google’s search engine in the United States just grows and grows. In the past three years, its market share gains have even been accelerating, making some people wonder whether the company will eventually obliterate what remains of its competition in search.
Certainly, antitrust scrutiny is a growing worry at the Googleplex. Last year, the company abandoned a proposed advertising pact with Yahoo when the Justice Department said it would file an antitrust lawsuit to block the deal. Last week, a small Web site operator, TradeComet.com, filed an antitrust suit against Google, accusing it of unfairly manipulating its advertising system to harm a potential competitor.
