There used to be a time when not many individuals had a computer. Obviously, things like computer networking weren’t a buzzword at the times. However, Time evolved & so evolved the technology in the computer field. With the internet, whole world shrunk & the term computer network gained importance. To prevent malpractices in sharing information across the globe through many connected computers, security of information became vital to service providers & end users.
To connect many computers together has traditionally involved having some physical medium running between them. It could be phone wire, coaxial cable or CAT5 cable. But since technological developments are taking place latest trend in Network security is popularly called “wireless network security”.
In recent trends, connecting through a network employs wireless technology. As name suggests, it doesn’t require any cable or telephone or physical hardware to connect computers in the network. Such network however, still requires security to prevent from data loss, secure information sharing, security from hacking. This is done through Wireless network security which is cost effective & total set-up required for setting up is quite simple too. You have your computer connected to internet by internet service provider. This now is connected to a wireless access point or router which broadcasts the signal. You connect wireless antenna network cards to your computers to receive that signal and talk back to the wireless access point and you are in business.
The following are the simple steps followed in setting up wireless network security for networks:
1) Change the System ID
2) Disable Identifier Broadcasting
3) Enable Encryption
4) Restrict Unnecessary Traffic. Besides these it involves changing administrator password.
Continuous research in wireless computer networking technology yields many new products. In recent times, Voice over the Internet is a new trend that is popular among internet service providers (ISP) and ISDN service providers. Telecom Networks too have looked at this growing technology that is going to affect them as well. Popularly known as “VOIP”, it has emerged as one of favorite for VOIP service providers. Many adverts say free phone calls VoIP but the reality is you pay for the internet connection and that is the cost. Many benefits like Voice or video conferencing, which were not possible on traditional phone devices, are now available because of VOIP service providers.
