Civilization IV on Linux with Wine 1.1.16

This is a guide for running the Windows version of Civilization IV (no expansion packs) on Linux using Wine. I’ve written guides on this twice ;before, but recently I wanted to play and found that my previous instructions were out of date again. Since I last played with Wine 0.9.44, the graphical glitches have been fixed and the game’s disk DRM works without a no-CD crack.
On Ubuntu 8.10 with the Nvidia graphics driver, the game runs almost flawlessly on the highest graphics settings. I’ve played it for hours without a single crash. Here are the only minor issues I’ve noticed:
  • The animated busy cursor only shows the first frame instead of animating.
  • City growth and production meters on the map don’t work. (See the tweaks section for a workaround.)

Install the latest version of Wine
Wine is constantly improving; it’s worth your time to get the latest version for the best application compatibility. Follow the directions on Wine’s website to set up the official Wine software repository in Ubuntu.
After you’ve added the Wine repository, install Wine from the package wine (click the link to install), or by running the command below in your terminal:
sudo apt-get install wine

Install Civilization
  1. I’ve had difficulty in the past with Wine and swapping CDs for installers. An easy workaround for this is to copy the data3.cab file from the second Civilization CD onto your hard drive before starting.
  2. Run setup.exe on the first Civilization CD using Wine. If you’re prompted to install DirectX, click cancel. (If you can’t continue after canceling the DirectX installer, see the workarounds section.) Select the express install, and when the installer asks for the second CD, browse to the folder on your hard drive where you copied data3.cab. The installer should finish successfully.
  3. Now you can patch the game to the latest version (1.74). Download, extract, and run the patcher executable with Wine. There will be an error at the end of the patching that is safe to ignore.
  4. You’ll need three native DLL files before you can run Civilization. Get these from the linked sites, or from a real Windows system: msxml3.dll, msxml3r.dll, and d3dx9_36.dll.
  5. Put the three DLLs in the Civilization program folder (~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier’s Civilization 4/).
  6. Add a native override for msxml3 using the Libraries tab of the winecfg tool (Applications->Wine->Configure Wine).
  7. Run the Civilization executable with Wine to start the game.
Tweaks
  • I’d recommend running Civilization in windowed mode so it doesn’t change your screen resolution or prevent you from switching applications. Do this simply by turning off full screen mode in the game’s graphics options.
  • Set the globe graphics to medium or lower to fix some graphical glitches in globe view.
  • City growth and production meters on the map don’t work. You can work around this by enabling the detailed city info option in the game’s graphics options. This causes the values to be displayed textually.
Issues and workarounds
  • If canceling the DirectX installer prevents the installation from continuing, try putting d3dx9_26.dll in your fake Windows system32 folder (.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/). This should cause DirectX to be detected.

Since there’s always updates coming up everyday, we have the latest one for running the Windows version of Civilisation IV on Linux using Wine, though we have been given two previous updates we have still another one. The latest one with the Ubuntu 8.10 Nvidia with the graphics driver, the game can be played with the highest graphics and without any flaws! We can play for hours together without it crashing down even once!

It was the first game I purchased in years since I am huge a fan of part 1 and 2 but got stuck in several browser games. Reminds me on countless nights playing with my room mate...it's a shame that the AI was so poor on the release. I heard they know fixed it with a patch…

Civilization is my favorite game in the world. I love strategy because then your brain is working hard. I have never thought that there is an ability to run this game on Linux. I love Linux more than Windows just because it is open source and you can use it for free. Now I will definitely use your advices and run it on Linux (If I will be able to do that). Hi Glen77. I am totally agree with you. Civilization is great game. You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through. Go Civilization!!!

I run this app on a linux operating system and it runs so good. The developers did such a great job with it. Using wine is the best things that you can do.

Well, I'm trying to run civilization 4 in the wine, I have seen many people do it, but wine is giving me problems

has been successfully installed and patched, but I can not run. crashes came just before the game opens (as I load the game, but when it's time to start the game full-screen crashes.

I upgraded xorg (nightmare) and video drivers, table

I think my Intel GMA 950 GPU

I'm currently running

as far as i know wine is what u use for installing software not drivers. you should use ndiswrapper or make sure you're using a distro with the latest stable kernel release… linux seems to be getting better all the time with oob wireless support, you just need to stay updated.
try sabayon 3.5 with kde, very easy to use gentoo based distro with everything installed (including wine and ndiswrapper) and hopefully it will recognize your card with no hassle…

I would like to install Linux on my PS3 but I have a satellite internet connection. This means that I can only download small files(or iso's). Like under 500mb. Are there any free iso linux files I can get for ps3 under 500mb?

This is one of the better games that you play. I run it on linux and it run just fine. I was running it on windows but runs better on linux. Keep up the good work.

i know wine is what u use for installing software not drivers. you should use ndiswrapper or make sure you're using a distro with the latest stable kernel release… linux seems to be getting better all the time with oob wireless support, you just need to stay updated

Civilization is an amazing game. The latest one with the Ubuntu 8.10 Nvidia with the graphics driver, the game can be played with the highest graphics and without any flaws.

cool it civilization now finally available for Linux. So nuh were served almost all popular platforms Zivilisaton. Only thing missing is an online version of the game so that civilization will also through the Internet browser and can be played as browser game. Or anywhere else and I did it once again not notice? For clues to a civilization browser game I am happy to ;)

Is not _always_ came running with 32-bit libraries 64 bit Linux? I'm asking, but if it had this message at the top i was entierly Shure. for example, on my system (archlinux) need the package bin32-nvidia-utils to run 3D stuff in the wine, so the graphics libraries do not seem to be an exception. There is an exception would make no sense…

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your thoughts? I mean, what you say is important and everything. But its got no punch, no pop! Maybe if you added a pic or two, a video? I agree that the Internet is a medium that is needed now. Many things can be done via the Internet, such as buying plane tickets, train, or find information about the hotel that will be occupied when traveling outside the city. Conscious or not, the internet really make life easier and saves a lot of time.

This game is one of the best games I've ever played in my computer. But still nothing beats a game being played in a capable computer. this game needs a little upgraded computer though.
