Do you require web development services?

When we decided to launch our social network we were at loss about how to go for it. We needed some expert guidance. Surfing the net for the relevant and reliable online services for the purpose was a daunting task. However we struck gold when we came across the web development company website.

What was so special about this Web Development Company that impressed us? First of all it has a team of real expert design professionals having proficiency in designing. And they do not leave any work unfinished or halfway. Their professional team clearly appreciates the fact that your website is your media for communication with the big world outside and it has to be impressive enough to gain the impression and attention of the people.

The agency started designing by developing the best user-friendly interface with great looks and feel and extremely easy functionalities. In the process they analyzed our requirements and at the same time studied the customer attitude and requirements. Finally they came up with a detailed plan for the website designing and development. We were quite happy to find that they reflected the branding, logos, and important messages relating to our company and its products quite efficiently.

Impressed with the efficiency and agility of the agency we entrusted them with full project development. They did not just jump into the work but had a thorough session with us analyzing in detail our requirements apropos to our goals and they detailed out every tit bit of the project before commencing the design development. Systematic planning and blending them adequately were their hallmark.

Google Analytics Adds Visual and Real-time Data Tracking

Google Analytics is improving how you can learn more about your website’s traffic, visually and in realtime.

Senior Vice President of advertising at Google Susan Wojcicki said that the move seeks to answer website owners’ desire to learn how users actually move around the website and if they’re converting. The new feature announced at Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco aims to answer that.

Google used the historic Napoleon's 1812 campaign into Russia for its visual representation. Yes, they did deep down into history and borrowed Charles Minard's popular visualization of the event. The representation showed geography, time, and troop strength of Napoleon’s army. Google used it as an inspiration probably because «probably the best statistical graphic ever drawn.»

The new Google Analytics can show you how many visitors are online, ergo real time. Administrators with Analytics account can also see real-time reports. Through this, your website’s performance is immediately reflected on your analytics. This metric may brought upon a new

I Launched ClubPond

It has taken a long time something like 1.5 to 2 years of planning but late last week I finally launched a new social networking site ClubPond.

While running Able Net Design for quite sometime I found out that there was a need for some kind of website which could be easily updated for community groups and clubs. Something that would be easy to keep their members and the general public up to date with what they were up to. Hence the ClubPond idea was born.

Over time while developing and planning the site it occurred to me that the members of these groups might need to be able to login to see information and post information if there are membership requirements etc to join the clubs. For instance my Tennis club, you would need to be a member so why give the general public access to post things to their ClubPond Profile?

That is when I decided to start incorporating some members services which then turned into member profiles which has now taken off with people joining as a member to chat with their friends etc… Something I didn't foresee but I am glad I added it in early in the planning stage.

Since the launch we have been featured on Feedmyapps and Killerstartups.

If you have a club, member of a club or just want to have some fun come on over to ClubPond, we can't wait to see you.

10 Useful Shortcuts in NetBeans IDE 6.0

The following are some of the many cool NetBeans IDE 6.0 keyboard shortcuts that no programmer will be able to do without, once you know they're there. Not all of these are new in 6.0, some were there before, but deserve to be highlighted because often they're overlooked: Move/copy up/down. Press Ctrl-Shift-Up and the current selection is copied to the lines right above the current selection. Press Alt instead of Ctrl and it is moved instead of copied. Press Down instead of Up and the lines of code will be copied below the current selection, as below: Inplace rename. If you want to change a variable, method, or other item, of which more than one are used in your code, press Ctrl-R, and you will see that all instances of the item turn blue at the same time, as shown below. Now, when you change the selected item, all the other instances change at the same time, until you press Escape, at which point the inplace rename mode comes to an end.

10 Ways to Cut Down Web Development Time

In today’s development environment: faster is better.

Present-day buzzwords and buzz terms like «rapid application development», «Asynchronous JavaScript and XML» (we can’t even wait for web pages reload anymore) and «Agile» gives you an insight of the fast-paced world we live in.

But getting things done rapidly does not mean working faster and harder — it's just working smarter. You will find 10 general, developing time-saving tips to cut down on your development time.

1. Use frameworks

Frameworks abstract regular code to provide you a structure and foundation for fast developing web applications.

A example of a framework is Ruby on Rails, a web application development framework for the Ruby language. By providing pre-made functions of code (for example — user input validation methods) — not only do you save time from writing your own code in Ruby — but you’re also assured that the packages have already been tested and inspected by other developers, saving you trouble in extensive testing as well as potential bugs due to the lack of testing.

The 100% Easy-to-Read Standard

Many web sites are crammed with small text that’s a difficult to read. Why? There is no reason for squeezing so much information onto the screen. It’s just a stupid collective mistake that dates back to a time when screens were really, really small. So…

Screen vs. magazine: 100% is NOT big;
Don’t tell us to adjust the font size

We do not want to change font site on our browser every time we visit a website!

Don’t tell us that busy pages look better
Crowded websites don’t look well: they look nasty. Filling pages with stuff has never helped usability. It’s laziness that makes you throw all kinds of information at us. We want you to think about your content and chose what’s more important. We don’t want to do your work.

Do not tell us that scrolling is bad
Because then all websites are bad. There is nothing wrong with scrolling, nothing at all. Just as there is nothing wrong with flipping pages in books.
Don’t tell us that content is not important.

90% of what is commonly referred to as web design is typography.

Don’t tell us to get glasses
Rather, stop licking your screen, lean back (!) and continue reading in a relaxed position.

How Google

Ranking scientists by their citations–the number of times they are mentioned in other scientists’ papers– is a miserable business. Everybody can point to ways in which this system is flawed:

* not all citations are equal. The importance of the citing paper is a significant factor
* scientists in different fields of study use citations in different ways. An average paper in the life sciences is cited about six times, three times in physics, and about once in mathematics.
* ground-breaking papers may be cited less often because a field is necessarily smaller in its early days.
* important papers often stop being cited when they are incorporated into textbooks

The pattern of citations between papers forms a complex network, not unlike the one the internet forms. Might that be a clue that point us towards a better way of assessing the merits of the papers that it consists of?

Sergei Maslov from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York state and Sidney Redner at Boston University have asked themselves just that question and suggest that Google’s PageRank algorithm might throw some light on the matter.

Finally, iPhone 3.0 to get MMS and copy&paste?

Apple have announced a special event on March 17th, where the company will launch the iPhone OS 3.0 Software. As usual, it has triggered a lot of speculation about what might be coming in the new release.

Mac Rumors cited Boy Genius Report that claims to have heard two most-awaited features: MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) and tethering:

MMS would finally offer iPhone users the ability to send photos by way of SMS, and tethering would allow you to share your iPhone’s internet connection with your laptop computer. An alleged Steve Jobs email even confirmed that Apple had been working on a thethering solution, so it certainly seems feasible. BoyGeniusReport’s record, however, has been spotty, so we can’t be entirely confident of the report.

Mac Rumors also mentioned:

…a better app-managing SpringBoard (with categories?), a solution to “push” notifications (background tasks?), and, yes… even copy and paste…

Will 3.0 OS be available for the iPhone 3G? I hope so.

Google Toolbar in Firefox: a personalized new tab page

Those of you who use Google Toolbar on Firefox are probably pretty familiar with the many features Toolbar 5 (beta) has to offer — from bookmarks to buttons and search box to «send to.» We've added a couple more features to the Firefox Toolbar, so feel free to download this «second beta» to get all the latest and greatest Google Toolbar has to offer.

One of the features I'm really excited about is the new tab page. Now, when you open up a new tab, instead of the blank white page you see by default in Firefox, you will instead see small thumbnails of your favorite sites (up to 9), as well as recently-closed and bookmarked pages based on your browser history. You can edit the thumbnails, and all this data remains locally on your browser, which means none of the information about your most viewed sites or recently closed pages will be sent back to Google. If for whatever reason you don't like this updated new tab page, you can always change it back to a blank page or to the website of your choice through either your Toolbar or Firefox settings. Some tab extensions may conflict with this feature, and it currently isn't compatible with Firefox 2, so make sure you check your settings or visit the Google Toolbar help center if you are having any problems.

Next time you want to go to your favorite site more quickly or restore an accidentally closed tab, you don't need to type out the URL. Typing Ctrl + T or double-clicking to the right of your open tabs will open up the new tab page with all your favorite sites right at your finger tips.

In addition, this release now provides the ability for Hebrew- and Arabic-speaking users to access Toolbar 5 with robust right-to-left text support. We've also fixed some of the most reported bugs to give you a faster and more stable experience with this update.

Innodb Performance Optimization Basics

In discussing with people I like to ask them a basic question — if you have a server with 16GB of RAM which will be dedicated for MySQL with large Innodb database using typical Web workload what settings you would adjust and interestingly enough most people fail to come up with anything reasonable. So I decided to publish the answer I would like to hear extending it with basics of Hardware OS And Application optimization.
I call this Innodb Performance Optimization Basics so these are general recommendation which work well for many applications, though the optimal settings of course depend on the workload.

Optimized Version of Rails MySQL Session Store is Available

The Problem

Original ActiveRecord sessions st ore is slow. It is fine for some low traffic sites, but it is too slow to use it for something larger. First of all, it is slow because ActiveRecord itself is slow. It is powerful ORM framework, but it is obviously overkill for such a simple task as a sessions management.

There are other possible solutions like cookie session store (session size is limited, no sensible data in sessions), memcached (no persistence + harder to implement high-available solutions).

That is why SqlSession store was created. It works with mysql directly with database APIs and works much faster than original AR session store. But sometimes it is still slow too because:

  • it creates/updates session on each hit – every bot or occasional web serfer create session records in your database so you end up with thousands of thousands of useless records in your sessions table while 99% of hits do not require any session updates.
  • it uses 32-characters string as a key for sessions records – all RDBMS work with string keys MUCH slower than with integers, so it would be much better to use integers, but we have these long session IDs and all session stores use them as a table key.
  • it uses auto_increment primary key, which causes table-level locks in InnoDB for all MySQL versions prior to 5.1.21. These table-level locks with unnecessary inserts cause really weird problems for large sites.

The Solution

As a solution for mentioned problems FastSessions Rails plugin was born.

So, first of all, we removed id field from the sessions table, so we do not need to use auto-increment locks. Next step was to make lookups faster and we’ve used a following technique: instead of using (session_id) as a lookup key, we’ve started using (CRC32(session_id), session_id) – two-columns key which really helps MySQL to find sessions faster because key cardinality is higher (so, mysql is able to find a record earlier w/o checking a lots of index rows). We’ve benchmarked this approach and it shows 10-15% performance gain on large sessions tables.

How To Make Money Online With Elance

What is Elance?

Elance is a website forum, a marketplace that allows people from all over the world to actively participate in buying and selling their products and services. As a freelance writer you can offer your writing services with very little effort on your part. If you can surf the web, use email and generally communicate in English (yup, it’s the principal language used on Elance) then you are pretty much good to go.

– How Does It Work?

It’s quite simple; Elance is a subscription based website that charges you a small fee to become a member. At the time of writing basic monthly subscriptions begin at $30. Once you’re registered you can browse all the active (open) projects and bid on the ones that interest you. As a member you can even set up a personal store front (profile) and showcase your products and services to potential buyers (and it’s not unusual to get direct enquiries from buyers this way.)

– If Your Bid Is Chosen

If your bid is selected you will get the chance to decide if you want to proceed with the project or not. If you decide to go ahead then you and the buyer enter into an agreement (Elance provides templates and samples at no charge.) You provide the services to the buyer and the buyer pays you what they promised – simple.

Elance gets a small commission on all projects that are awarded. But don’t worry, there is no cost to you for winning projects – that’s the buyers responsibility and the buyer will be billed directly (it doesn’t even come out of the agreed project payments!)

– So How Much Work Is Available To You?

That’s a good question; after all if you are going to spend at least $30 a month on a basic subscription, you really need to figure out if the subscription is worth it. The number of open projects varies, however it’s not unusual to find between 150 and 200 writing projects available at any given time.

– And How Much Are These Projects Worth?

There are currently two types of project postings on Elance: BASIC and SELECT. If you have only chosen a basic membership then you can only bid on Basic projects. You will need a Select membership to bid on the select projects.

And the reason you would buy a select membership is simple – select projects pay more, are less likely to end without being awarded (yes there are people on Elance who post projects to “get a feel for the market” and have no intention of actually awarding the project!)

So back to the main question – how much are the projects really worth? Again, this data varies over time (I cover this and more in my new report on www.ElanceExposed.com), however here’s a quick ‘rule of thumb’ that I’ve found to be fairly accurate: If you multiply all the number of open projects by $250 and multiply that again by 70% you will get a fairly good idea. For example, 200 open projects X $250 X 70% = $35,000

– But What About the “Big” Projects?

There are big projects on Elance, they get posted infrequently but they are available. As you might imagine these projects are usually posted by companies – not people – and they usually pay 5 to 10 times what a regular project pays. With this kind of payout you can imagine the competition is quite high, however pitching to a business is not the same as pitching to a person.

– What About Gotchas And Other Issues?

There aren’t too many. The biggest one that springs to mind is that Elance currently does not offer a refund policy on their subscriptions. You actually have to get on board and sign up to get a feel for the Elance market. And to be quite frank, you really need to give yourself a fighting chance and sign up for three months.

If you signed up for a three month Select membership you would currently pay $150 USD. That’s not a huge amount of money, but it is a bit steep if you find out that Elance is not for you.

– Here Are a Few Elance Quick Facts:

* 100,000+ potential buyers visit Elance Online every week

* Web’s #1 consulting site and top 1,000 most visited site

* Awarded Best of the Web by Forbes (2003)

* Reliability Certified by the Better Business Bureau

– And Here Are a Few Neat Benefits of Using Elance:

* Easily market yourself to a global pool of prospective clients.

* Pitch your services at prices you establish.

* Make a profit as an independent consultant.

It’s true, thousands of service firms and individuals take advantage of Elance as a marketing channel. And Elance actively supports your efforts with aggressive online and offline marketing delivering high volumes of traffic.

– Remember, You Can Win Work 3 Different Ways:

(1) Answer the phone after people check out your online profile and work samples.

(2) Develop pre-priced ‘buy now’ packages that buyers can purchase instantly.

(3) Bid on projects – many buyers post their requirements directly online.

– Conclusions

Before you dive into Elance you might want to do some digging on the Internet to get a feel for what others have experienced. For instance you might want to find out more about the bid success ratios, the real differences between Basic and Select projects, how many projects will pay you more than $1,500 and so forth.

You can make money on Elance if you know what you are doing, and quite frankly all it takes is a little time and patience. Good luck, and happy bidding!

Dropbox review: the do-everything storage service

Dropbox is considered as the cross platform for serving file sharing, synchronizing and the backup. This application is available to every one as a free one up to a limit of 2GB. You need to pay $10 or ?5 per month for extra 50GB of Storage. It will cost $99 or ?56 per year.

It will be appearing as a folder in your MAC PC and called as Dropbox, from that you can place your file in somewhere in the system. You may not that a shortcut appeared in the Finder’s Sidebar. It is simple that any thing you placed in that folder is synchronized to the server’s of Online Dropbox ( similar to Amazon’s S3 storage service) and it is made accessible to any computer that links to your Dropbox account.

It also avails that if one of your computers is turned off, or in asleep mode or in offline, automatically they will get connected and synchronized when it is connected and the Dropbox is activated.

You are having the option of viewing your files though some web interface. Optimized web browsers in iPhone or iPod will be helpful in viewing the files if you have.

Dropbox makes you feel pleasure to use, since it gives the accurate details to you. In the Mac PC’s menubar option allows you to access the Dropbox files more frequently. You can share your photos in the Dropbox with your friends who have mail address (need to be a Dropbox User) only. It can routinely converts the photos in to the gallery for easy viewing. It can be very useful in recovering the deleted file in your Dropbox.

If you need to edit some of your files that is shared in the Dropbox, you may not need to transfer the whole file and again to your connected computers. Rather you can transfer the edited part alone and these updates are echoed in connected computers. You can reduce your bandwidth size if you want to be.

The only disadvantage of Dropbox is, it only watches the specified folder and not all the Connected Dropbox Folders. The synchronization must be maintained between the two computers if you want to get linked with them. Apart from this, if you are looking for cross-platform file synchronization service, then it is obvious you have to prefer Dropbox for their best output and it values your each penny.

How to make sure that Best Practices can be used again at the initial stage of a new project? Whether those ideas resemble in whole project?

The process of project delivery involves modification due to the client request, different ideas, new environment, and contracted timelines. So people consistently throughout the process of modification try to reach the effective way and new ideas to deliver a project in good quality. This is followed by all level of IT organizations.

Hence the question is how to confine these best practices? So that it can be instantly used by other batch of people for new projects.

The method of reusing the best practices is very helpful to complete the existing project in quick manner.

But it is not possible to completely rely on this method to produce the quality project through organization and no guarantee to get positive feedbacks from the clients. Of course it’s very important to confine the rare and vital source. So this recognized resource can be appended to the record of best practices to point out the corresponding person who learnt or who use it. Mean while discussion get started between peoples, which in turn will initiates the sharing of knowledge and other useful data.

After some period of time definitely people begins to utilize it as platform to quickly study the relevant concept before beginning the project.

Stumbling Blocks:

It is necessary to find all possible ways to reach the project peoples and make them to add their experiences into records of best practices. Certainly it’s some what hard to attain it, so be sure whether this effort is helpful for your organization for long time.

Benefits of doing it correctly:

This will pave way to complete the major part of the project soon. Hence through this the effort to apply the rework is tremendously reduced and by the way the quality of project is guaranteed. Ultimately it will increase the productivity with no defects in the stage of post delivery and in process of working.

How to Drive Traffic to Blog

Blogging is quite common now and many of us owning a blog. However lot of people doesn’t know how to compel traffic to their blogs. We hope this article will provide much information about driving traffic to your blog.

From past to now, people keep on asking whether advertising will get traffic. My sincere reply would be a big ‘No’. If you own a new blog, don’t forget that advertising won’t drive traffic to your blog. There may be some special cases you may get traffic by advertising. It would not be helpful to many new bloggers (advertising in blogs is a diverse one and we will see it in briefly here)

Do you know that blogs are good way to get traffic? And it is secret behind the successful webmaster. But bloggers are still rubbing their head to get the answer for it.

Many questions aroused regarding traffic drive through blogs. Why blogging itself cannot generate traffic? If it is true why do you want to oblige traffic for your blog? Why can’t you just do blogging and it can generate traffic by itself?

It is not that much easy to get the traffic for your blog.

You can generate traffic only by means of applying Search Engine Optimization in your blog. If not by SEO, you have to look out for another option that would be very hard and some times it will frustrate you.

I can suggest you for Search engine optimized blogs and believe me this is the easiest way to get traffic for your blog.

iPhone 3.0: More hits than misses

A gaggle of tech journalists, analysts, and developers crowded into an auditorium at Apple's headquarters on Tuesday to hear the details of iPhone 3.0. As Scott Forstall, Apple's head of iPhone software development, promised, the update is a major one with a host of sorely needed features for application developers and consumers.

In all, Apple promises 100 new features with iPhone 3.0, including multimedia messaging and a landscape keyboard. Although Apple did not reveal all 100 additions on Tuesday--which leads me to wonder just what they'll count as a new feature (perhaps cut, copy, and paste will count as three)--the highlights were worth the trip to Cupertino, Calif.
Yes, a few hoped-for features are still missing, but iPhone 3.0 is more about what we got than what we didn't. Apple will release the update this summer. It will be free for iPhone 3G and iPhone Classic users, but iPod Touch users will pay $9.95.

What we got

Multimedia messaging
At long last, we have it. We figured that it was coming so it was at the top of our iPhone 3.0 Wish List. Yet I feel a little weird getting so excited about such a basic feature that almost every other cell phone has.
Also, it's very disappointing that iPhone Classic owners will not get MMS, even if they upgrade. Apparently, the original iPhone lacks the necessary radio to make MMS work. That, of course, leads me to the very pertinent question: why?

Landscape keyboard
Another feature that's long overdue. In addition to the Safari browser, it now can be used in any application, including e-mail. Hallelujah.

Cut, copy, and paste

Booting Linux in five seconds

At the Linux Plumbers Conference Thursday, Arjan van de Ven, Linux developer at Intel and author of PowerTOP, and Auke Kok, another Linux developer at Intel's Open Source Technology Center, demonstrated a Linux system booting in five seconds. The hardware was an Asus EEE PC, which has solid-state storage, and the two developers beat the five second mark with two software loads: one modified Fedora and one modified Moblin. They had to hold up the EEE PC for the audience, since the time required to finish booting was less than the time needed for the projector to sync.

How did they do it? Arjan said it starts with the right attitude. «It's not about booting faster, it's about booting in 5 seconds.» Instead of saving a second here and there, set a time budget for the whole system, and make each step of the boot finish in its allotted time. And no cheating. «Done booting means CPU and disk idle,» Arjan said. No fair putting up the desktop while still starting services behind the scenes. (An audience member pointed out that Microsoft does this.) The «done booting» time did not include bringing up the network, but did include starting NetworkManager. A system with a conventional hard disk will have to take longer to start up: Arjan said he has run the same load on a ThinkPad and achieved a 10-second boot time.

Five Reasons Apple Should Open The iPhone

You know, BusinessWeek asked me about Apple potentially open sourcing the iPhone over a year ago. Since then: nothing out of Apple, despite mounting pressure from projects like Android that are vying for Apple’s throne. With Christmas only days away, I’ve only got one thing I want to ask Santa Jobs for, and it ain’t a Red Rider BB Gun.

All I want from Apple is a more open platform. Sure, the odds are slim as long as they remain dominant. That’s why I’m not asking them to completely open source the iPhone. I’m just asking them to crack the door and let the breeze in.

It’s Good for Devvies, Non-devvies, and Apps Alike

Open source is becoming the default way to develop software in many industries. Why? Because a properly-managed, open environment leads to targeted, robust features and helps developers share code in a healthy coop-tition that helps everybody in the iPhone ecosystem.

Developers love working faster, cheaper, and more effectively. More importantly, many folks that aren’t traditional developers are starting to develop apps for platforms like the iPhone. He who satiates that audience wins the war.
